What is Industry 4.0 and how can you reap the benefits of it?

Industry 4.0 is considered the fourth industrial revolution because it has the same significant potential as the previous three industrial revolutions. At the end of the 18th century the mechanization through the invention of the steam engine. The technological revolution at the end of the 19th century, with new technologies such as electricity and communication technology. And from (approximately) the 1970s, the arrival of the computer in the workplace, which led to the possibility of having access to information practically anywhere in the world. That was the 3rd industrial revolution.

The 4th revolution was actually announced before it actually happened. The term Industry 4.0 was first used in 2011 and is predicted to have a major impact on the current way of manufacturing and production processes. It is expected that the factories as we know them, will change into smart factories that manage internal processes and solve problems themselves. In other words, it will be an autonomous factory.

Although factories cannot yet operate autonomously, the current state of technology can provide many benefits. This includes reducing risk (for people and the environment), lowering maintenance costs, increasing 'time-to-value', improving production, increasing customer satisfaction and driving innovation.
